Positional release technique works under the theory that, by placing the body in the most comfortable position possible, therapists can reset the proprioceptors in a patient’s joints and musculature, which act as sensors governing the brain’s perception of the position of neighbouring parts of the body. By stimulating the proprioceptors, the musculoskeletal system can be brought back into balance, relieving pain and restoring range of motion by causing shortened muscles to relax.
In a recently published article entitled, “Positional Release Therapy Helps Release Pain,’ author and expert, Timothy E. Speicher, writes:
“Positional release therapy is an excellent adjunct to the practice of massage therapy, because it allows the massage therapist to first unwind tissue prior to manipulating it, making massage less painful and more effective, and its therapeutic effects longer-lasting,” adding that instead of forcefully compressing or stretching the knot or tissue, which may only engender short-acting endogenous pain relief, tissue is unknotted and then realigned with massage therapy, further facilitating tissue perfusion and structural alignment, much like removing a kink or knot in a garden hose.
“I have found positional release therapy is best applied prior to massage, or as tender and trigger points are found during the course of a massage,” he writes.
Positional release can be particularly effective in providing instant relief in cases of acute pain or muscle spasm, and can be integrated into treatment plans for many soft tissue and joint complaints. The technique has been shown to be effective in helping to treat conditions such as whiplash and chronic back pain, and can also reduce stress levels and aid more restful sleep.
