Get Relief from Lower Back Pain with Massage Therapy

May 4, 2017

Lower back pain is the leading cause of job disability in the world. About one in ten people have it, and for many who develop back pain, the condition becomes chronic.

Low back pain is second only to cold symptoms when it comes to complaints that send people to the doctor. Sooner or later, back pain seems to get most of us. Massage therapy can provide substantial healing and pain relief for people suffering from low back pain caused by muscle tension and strain, if the correct muscles are targeted.

In a recently published article entitled, “Massage Therapy For Lower Back Pain,” author and expert, Beth Mueller, writes:

“Most healthcare providers are recognizing massage therapy as a legitimate aid for lower back pain and an effective adjunct to lower back treatments,” adding that fifty-four percent of healthcare providers say they will encourage their patients to pursue massage therapy in addition to medical treatment.

Mueller writes that a study on massage and back pain conducted at the Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami found that massage lessened lower back pain, depression and anxiety, and improved sleep. “The massage therapy group also showed improved range of motion and their serotonin and dopamine levels were higher.”

Patients with severe back pain should be checked by medical personnel before beginning massage therapy, and patients should always obtain an accurate medical diagnosis for the cause of their back pain prior to beginning a new treatment such as massage therapy to rule out potentially serious conditions.
